The Food

One of the hardest parts and, at the same time, the best parts of living cross-culturally is the food! Some things are hard to get used to, and others are mind explodingly good!

I am looking forward to sharing some of my dining adventures with you! To cover Filipino food in very broad strokes, the food is either very sweet, very sour, or very spicy. You may think, “well, that sounds good I like vivid flavors.” I agree with you. I love vivid flavors! I did struggle when some of the flavors were in places I didn’t expect. Sweet pizza and pasta sauce are one thing of those things. Another is the use of canned spam. I managed to live a long time without eating spam, and I have learned to eat it and fake a smile… Another curious thing about food and your average Filipino is their relationship to rice. In the Philippines, it is not a meal unless there is rice. If the rice is missing, it is just a snack. First thing in the morning, enough rice goes into the rice cooker for the entire day. It is ready to be eaten for breakfast and packed for lunch. The remaining rice is eaten with dinner. I am not a huge fan of rice, so my Filipino friends find me a bit odd!

I find so many Filipino foods absolutely delicious, and I can’t wait to share those with you. I will post recipes of my favorites, and once I am back in the country, I will record videos as I experience some old favorites and try new food.
